Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. In this process academic excellence is important. Academic excellence does not mean just getting good marks. It means being fluent in languages, being well -versed in various subjects, being good communicators and developing creative thinking.
Equally important is character building, by developing a system of rights and wrongs, which begins at home, continuous in the school and gets perfected in the society. It also includes imbibing the eternal values of human life and knowing and respecting our traditions, culture and sensibilities. Good education means teaching young people to understand their lives better.
One can find all kinds knowledge from the internet and from smart electronic gadgets. But children need much more than these information. They need a teacher in the flesh and blood – as a live role model, as a practical guide, as a friend, as a person who understands, encourages, cares and corrects. They need a teacher who teaches life’s lessons, beyond the lessons in the text books and home works.
Parents are responsible to God for the education of their children. Besides teaching the children at home with their good examples and advices, parents have to find a good school for their children and cooperate with that school for the all-round development of the children.
“Lighthouses,” writes Anne Lamott,” don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save , they just stand there shining. ”A school is a lighthouse diffusing knowledge.
In St. Joseph’s Convent School, Phagwara, as in our other Catholic schools, we lay emphasis on developing better personalities and bright future of the children who are entrusted to us.

May God bless all who read this.
